Obituary for Carol Lee Gutenkunst

Carol L. Gutenkunst (nee Stock) of Grafton, formerly Estero, FL passed away peacefully on October 15, 2019 at the age of 92.

Carol was born on December 21, 1926 to Edward and Lucille (nee Meyers) Stock in Milwaukee, WI. She was raised in Whitefish Bay and graduated in 1944 from Milwaukee University School and Northwestern University in 1948 with a degree in education. She married the late Phillip H. Gutenkunst on October 23, 1948 in Milwaukee. They started their family while living in Whitefish Bay, moving to 10106 W. Hawthorne Rd., Mequon in 1958. Carol loved the farm with all the animals, which was many. They enjoyed horseback riding with the neighbors, kids and anyone else that wanted to ride along. Carol always welcomed anyone, either for Sunday dinners of open faced hamburgers, puffel pot, or if they needed a place to stay. Even if it was a little late, she greeted anyone with a smile for milk and cookies.

Carol was the co-owner of the Red Wheel Ltd in Thiensville for over 27 years. She was involved in local functions and was very instrumental in the Milwaukee Service Club. After retirement, Phil and Carol wintered in Estero, FL, but came back to their roots in WI for the summer. They also enjoyed traveling throughout the world. Carol was an avid bridge player with master points and was on the bocce ball league in FL. After Phil passed away in 2010, Carol moved to Florida. In 2017 she decided to move back to WI to be closer to her family. She was the welcoming face at “happy hour” at Village Point Commons in Grafton.

Carol is survived by her children Doug, Wendy (Rick) Riemer, Sally (Warren) Poppe, Mary (Hale) Alverson, and Ann (Jim) Phillip. She is further survived by her grandchildren, Holly (Chad) Willsher, Joe, Ross (Kristi) Riemer, Leah (Zac) Schick Celeste Poppe, Andra (Jim) Johnson, Kirsten (Peter) Robertson, step-grandchildren Lee Phillip, Kim (Keith) Priesgen, Kris (Holly) Phillip, great-grandchildren Madison and Logan Willsher, Grant and Reese Riemer, Spencer and Tyler Schick, Kaylee and Parker Angone, Maxwell and Reed Johnson, Forest and Hawk Robertson, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
