Obituary for Gregory G. Baur

Gregory G. Baur

Passed away May 26 at the age of 75. Greg was appointed to MPD July 7, 1969. He earned a class “C” citation under Meritorious Duty November 25, 1974; promoted to Detective January 8, 1978, and then to Detective Lieutenant August 2, 1987. Greg was the commander of MPD's Hazardous Devices Squad (Bomb Unit) when he retired April 1, 2000. He was also the past IABTI International Director from 2001 to 2002. He was a distinguished life member of IABTI region three and a member since 1979. He was considered a renowned tech expert and worked both the 9/11 and Oklahoma Tragedies.

Greg was well liked and respected as being a fair and caring man and a true and loyal friend. He could often times be found at Metro Cigars in Brookfield, WI drinking coffee and, in his words, “solving the world’s problems”, though he was known to enjoy a bourbon every now & then, visiting with his friends. He was an avid reader and earned the nickname “professor”. He was the one everyone wanted on their trivia team. His passion after retiring was dog rescue and Greg loved and lost over 20 dogs throughout his rescue and adoption years. He was fondly called a “foster fail” and was proud of it!

Greg was a loving brother and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Survived by his four loving sisters Gayle, Gwenn, Gretchen and Gari and their families. Preceded in death by his parents, George, and Bunny (Bernice) Baur and his brother Guy.

A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at the American Legion, Post 1 at N120W15932 Freistadt Rd., Germantown, WI from 4:00-7:00 pm. A bagpipe and honor guard ceremony are to be held at 4:30 with a bourbon toast and an open mic for those who wish to share their stories of this amazing man. He will be missed by so many. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Greg’s name to the mastiff rescue or humane society would be appreciated.
