Obituary for James Matthew Hammond

On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, James (Jim) M. Hammond passed away at the age of 67.

Jim was born to John and Sue Hammond on April 24, 1955 in Augsburg, Germany. His family moved frequently due to his father's Army service. In 1977, he graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in King's Point, NY and was commissioned as an Ensign with the US Naval Reserve. Jim went on to earn his MBA from Houston Baptist University in Houston, TX. He worked for over 40 years in the oil industry, most recently with Occidental Petroleum as a chartering manager, retiring in 2020.

Jim had many interests and especially loved history and anything to do with cars and ships. In Texas, he was active and proudly supported the MS150 bicycle charity ride, appreciated a good round of golf, was always ready to go hunting and tackled any handyman projects that came his way. Jim was fond of his time volunteering with the kids' high school marching band on their loading crew and would step in and drive the box truck when needed. After moving to Wisconsin in the fall of 2021, he and Elisa explored their new home by hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking, picnics along the lake and becoming involved with Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Jim is survived by his wife of 37 years, Elisa; his three children Katie, Andrew (Liz) and Matthew; his mother Sue; three brothers John (Rosemary), Charlie (Patty) and Dan; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Jim is preceded in death by his father, John.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Froedtert Hospital for their dedicated care.

A memorial service, officiated by Pastor Jim Hearne of Our Savior's Lutheran, will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 10th at Phillip Funeral Home, located at 1420 W. Paradise Drive, West Bend, WI 53095. Visitation will be prior to the service at 10:00 am. Interment of the cremains will be at Washington County Memorial Park at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the USMMA Alumni Association at www.usmmaalumni.com/donate or the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society at www.nationalmssociety.org/Donate.
