Obituary for James Richard Slagle

James (Jim) Richard Slagle, of Eagle River, WI, passed away peacefully early Wednesday, February 27 at the age of 88. Jim was born February 18, 1931, in Mt. Carmel, Ill. He grew up in Dixon, Ill where he graduated from high school while serving in the Illinois National Guard.

After graduation, he attended the University of Illinois where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and was a proud member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. Following graduation, he was called to serve in the US Army, at White Sands Proving Grounds, NM. Following his enlistment, Jim moved to Evanston, Ill to begin his teaching and coaching career. While in Evanston, he met Sandra Doak and they were married on April 5, 1958.

Furthering his education, Jim attained a Master’s Degree in School Administration, also from the University of Illinois in 1962. In 1966, the family moved to Ely, MN where Jim pursued a dream opportunity in the outfitting industry. Two years later, he reentered his education career as an assistant principal and athletic director in Babbitt, MN. Leaving Minnesota in 1970, the family moved to Kenosha, WI where Jim was a middle school principal for over 22 years.

Jim loved the outdoors, camping, hunting and fishing, which led them to retire in Eagle River, WI. He was involved in many community organizations, was a past Man-of-the-Year in Eagle River, and most enjoyed his employment with WRJO radio where he was a Saturday morning host and a high school sports announcer. Jim was also an avid woodworker and loved to share his creations and carvings with family, friends and the community. After 27 years in Eagle River, they recently moved to Mequon, WI where they could be closer to their children.

James is survived by his wife, Sandra; three children, Michael (Claire) Slagle of West Bend, WI, Stacey (John) Murray of Mequon, WI and Steven (Ann Ward) Slagle of Auburn, WA; four grandchildren, Collin, Miles and Garrett Murray and Samantha Slagle

Preceded in death by: his parents, Earl (Cecil) Slagle, and siblings Mary (Wallace) Hicks and Earl (Rena) Slagle.

An informal Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 9 at 1:00 pm at The Wright House Senior Living, (6751 W. Mequon Rd.) Mequon, WI.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University of Illinois Foundation, Applied Health Sciences Annual Fund in memory of James R. Slagle (1305 W. Green St., Urbana, IL 61801).
