Obituary for John Serdan

Born in Velika Pisanica, Croatia 07/29/1939. It was then Yugoslavia. When he was a young boy during WWII, his family was forced to leave their home and flee to refugee camps traveling by wagons, foot and crowded trains, all in fear. They ended in Germany. After living for some time in Germany, they were able to obtain visas to Venezuela. This is where he spent most of his youth. When he was 18 years old he was able to come to the US, after his parents came here, obtained employment and were then able to sponsor him.

He then met the love of his life, Gwendolyn Aileen Doehler and they married 08/26/1961. They moved to West Bend in 1966 and here they raised their family.

John was a successful salesman most of his working life, as he had a passion for getting to know people and helping them meet their needs. Him and Gwen opened Video Plus in 1984 and eventually owned 7 locations throughout Southeast WI. He was still working in the last days of his life for Penny Mustard in Menomonee Falls, WI. He had a very close relationship with the owners and his co-workers, as they were like a second family to him.

John was a caring, generous and wise father. He worked hard to give his children the best life possible. He loved his grandchildren deeply and was very often at their concerts, sporting events, and was also their chauffeur to and from school and practice. They shared a special relationship with him. He will be missed greatly.

He passed away peacefully, after a long battle with prostate cancer, at Kathy Hospice on
07/18/2019 surrounded by his loving family.

John is survived by his daughter Theresa (Neil) Narveson, sons Mark (Melissa), and Brad, grandchildren; Andrea, Lindsey and Justin Narveson, Megan and Mitchell Serdan, brothers-in-law Gary Christensen and Dale Doehler. He was preceded in death by his wife Gwendolyn Serdan, parents Joseph and Katarina Serdan, sisters Ann Horwath and Maria Schissler, Katarina Ibric, brothers-in-law Andrew Horwath, John Schissler and Rudy Ibric.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mooney and Staff at Kathy Hospice for the compassionate care he received.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 24th at Jansen Family Park (3745 Schuster Dr. West Bend, WI 53095) from 5:00-9:00pm.
