Obituary for Lorraine M. "Polly" Schmidt (Isselman)

Lorraine Marie “Polly” Schmidt (nee Isselman), age 87, of Newburg and West Bend, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Lawlis Family Hospice in Mequon. She was born January 10, 1936, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend to F.P. (Florent Peter) and Mayme (nee Nejedlo) Isselman. Polly was raised in Newburg. She attended Holy Trinity Grade School and graduated from West Bend High School with the Class of 1953. Mom was accepted by Marquette University and intended to attend after High School. Instead, she devoted herself to raising her six children. She supported her children by working in the East Plant office of the Gehl Company. She loyally worked there for 30 years before retiring in early 2000. Polly was a proud member of the GEHL Hexelbank Club. She enjoyed the Gehl Company reunions very much every year to catch up on things with co-workers from her working years. Memories of the Gehl Picnics at Barton Park will always be treasured.

One of Mom’s passions in life was her love of music. She took her initial accordion lessons next door to her parents’ home on Main Street in Newburg. Her more advanced lessons were taken in downtown West Bend, in what is now the Centrum Building. She became an accomplished accordion player and later taught others. She always enjoyed music playing in our home. Some of her favorites were ABBA, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Neil Diamond, The Mamas and the Papas, The Moody Blues, and too many others to remember. Mom loved seeing the Moody Blues, live at the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville, FL October of 2002. She was a proud member of the Senior Chorus out of West Bend’s Senior Center until she could no longer perform to her standards. She always cherished this membership, and her spirit will always be with the Senior Chorus’ future performances.

During Mom’s retirement years, she enjoyed her trips to visit her children in their homes in the Fox Valley, and out of state in Lexington, MO, Orlando, FL, Jacksonville/St Augustine, FL, and Nashville, TN. She loved all the time she was able to spend with family, but especially with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also very much enjoyed day trips to Oneida Casino in Green Bay with family and friends.

Mom was a true West Bender and always considered West Bend home. West Bend Saturday morning Garage/Yard Sales were a favorite past time, along with browsing the aisles of St. Vincent DePaul and Goodwill. Mom was also very generous in donating kindly to numerous charities continuously over the years. She loved reading, and often provided reading subscriptions to family and friends.

Mom, thank you for all that you did for your family and friends. We love you and you will be missed very much until we are all together again!

Survivors include her six children: Beckie (Dave) Krug of Fond du Lac, Mike (Marybeth) of Orlando, FL, Laura Farina of Lexington, MO, Pat (Mary) of Campbellsport, Vickie Shaffer of West Bend, and Pete (Kathy) of Nolensville, TN; 4 grandchildren: Katie (Kory), Meghan, Matt (Mary), and Nick (Ashley); 9 great grandchildren: Connor, Kendra, Makenna, Josephine, Genevieve, Caroline, Makaela, Mallory, and Mackenzie; 2 great-great-grandchildren: Enslee and Beau; 1 brother, Jack (JoAnn) Isselman; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Polly was preceded in death by her granddaughter Alissa, grandson-in-law Chad, sisters Rose Johnson and Marjorie Grotelueschen, and brothers-in-law’s Walter Grotelueschen and Charles Johnson.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, October 11th at 11:00 A.M. at Holy Angels Church, (138 N. 8th Ave., West Bend), with visitation from 9:45 AM – 10:45 AM. The burial will be at the Newark Cemetery (3132 Newark Drive, West Bend) Thursday, October 12th, at 12:00 PM.

A special thank you to Cathy Johnson Spies, Rita Johnson Kandel, Jackie Isselman Newell, Mary Schmidt, Danny Schmidt, Jeanne Schmidt Gauger, Judy Schmidt Stallman, Father Howard Haase of Holy Angels Church, and Becky of Lawlis Family Hospice for the support they gave to Polly during her last days with us.
