Obituary for Norman William "Butch" Schaub

Norman William “Butch” Schaub passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024 at The Cottages at Cedar Run in West Bend, WI at the age of 86. He was born on May 1,1937 in Fond du Lac, WI to Norman J. and Cecilia (nee Hau) Schaub. On November 26, 1960, after a 6-month courtship, Norm married the love of his life Mary Elizabeth Pesch. Butch and Beth were married for nearly 60 years when Beth passed away in 2020. Norm is survived by his five children; Michele (Peter Giarratano) Schaub of Aurora, IL, Doug Schaub of West Bend, WI, Sharon (Mike) Hopp of Muskego, WI, Sheila Schaub, of West Bend, WI, Brad (Carrie) Schaub of West Bend, WI, seven grandchildren; Kyla (Justin) Murphy, Zachary Hopp, Nicholas (Kaitlyn) Hopp, Kevin (Taylor) Schaub, Makaela Hopp, Jane Schaub, Ethan Hopp; and three great grandsons, Rory Murphy, Ian Schaub, and Ted Schaub, with a fourth arriving in March. He was a proud uncle and friend to many nieces and nephews, and welcomed numerous extended family members and friends with open arms. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Beth, mother Cecelia (nee Hau) Schaub, father Norman J. Schaub, step-mother, Germaine (nee Forsche) Schaub, brother, Donald Schaub, and step-brother Robert Forsche.

Norm had an infectious smile and the gift of gab. He loved cars and could tell you the make and model of every car he ever owned. He had a fantastic memory for names, places, details, and people. He always had a joke or one-liner to share and brought smiles and laughter to all who knew him. Along with his family, Norm enjoyed snowmobiling, snow skiing, water-skiing, golf, and boat racing. Growing up along the shore of Lake Winnebago, in Fond du Lac, WI, Norm witnessed the Winnebagoland Outboard Marathon in the late 1950s and was hooked. He started racing shortly after that and continued to race boats for the next 30 years. The entire family grew to love the sport, including his wife Beth who served many long hours on the judges stand as chief scorer. As soon as his sons Doug and Brad turned 9 years old, they too began racing. Norm built many of their very competitive race boats for himself and the boys in his garage or basement. After building one of the race boats in the basement of the family home, he realized that it wouldn’t fit up the stairs. He creatively solved this problem by enlarging a basement window. Once Norm hung up his racing helmet, he continued as the crew chief for Doug and Brad. Norm served as commodore of the local racing clubs for many years. He became highly involved at the national level by serving on the board of directors for the American Powerboat Racing Association (APBA). Norm was awarded the most prestigious award in boat racing when he was inducted into the APBA Honor Squadron in 1997. The family enjoyed traveling to boat races all over the country in a station wagon, truck camper, or motorhome and still keep in touch with their racing family to this day. Off of the race course, Norm followed in his father’s footsteps by taking over the family business NJ Schaub and Sons. Norm and his brother Don eventually moved the business that was initially a residential plastering and drywall business in Fond du Lac, WI, to Milwaukee where they expanded into the commercial side of the business until 2002 when Norm retired.

We sure are going to miss you Norman, Norm, Normie, Butch, Dad, Uncle Butch, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, Storman Norman, Tunco, Butchie, Harry, Daddy, Pops, Daddio.

“We love you more.”
