Obituary for Pauline J Hoff (Jones)

Pauline J. Hoff (nee Jones) passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, August 5, 2021 just days after celebrating her 92nd birthday on August 2nd.

Beloved wife for 57 years of the late William R. Hoff. Preceded in death by her parents Paul and Ethel Stark Jones.

Loving mother of Paul (Cindy) Hoff, Bill (Merlyn) Hoff and Nancy Covert, proud and doting grandmother of Paul, Olivia, Taylor, George, Lloyd, Charlie and Sarah. She is further survived by extended family, devoted Goddaughter, lifelong tennis companions, loyal friends, caring neighbors and Harley, her shadow and cat.

Pauline lived a full and happy life. She was devoted to family and God, a patriot and firm believer in The Constitution of the United States. Talented artist, musician, writer, athlete, and seashell spotter. Longtime resident of Mequon and Longboat Key, Florida. Shorttime resident of Slinger. Member of The Women’s Club, The Junior League, The Town Club. Attended Downer Seminary, Shorewood High School, Rogers Hall.

Pauline will be remembered for her years of service and contributions to the tennis community on and off the court. For her wicked drop shot and over 25 years of collecting medals, trophies and national tennis ball charms with long time doubles partner, Betty Claus. Her greatest tennis achievement on the court, though, was meeting her husband Bill Hoff at The Town Club on Farwell Avenue in 1953. That location burned to the ground to which Bill and Polly claimed, because their love was so hot!

The highly anticipated Christmas card was an annual treasure found in the mailboxes of friends and family. Pauline would spend months determining a theme, painting a canvas and writing a heartfelt message. An artist since childhood, her paintings were inspired by her surroundings, travels, and imagination. Some paintings were accompanied by her poems or short stories.

Writing was a form of expression Pauline used to preserve her imagination and childhood. Tales of her adoption at age 2 during the depression, growing up in New York during WWII and moving to Milwaukee in her teens reveal how she persevered through life. Her writings are a treasure. She would convey priceless advice and words of encouragement on grandchildren’s birthday cards. Her writings and artwork allow her spirit and legacy to live on.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Sanidas for providing years of care for Pauline and Bill. MAREA Services, caregiver extraordinaire, sweet Alma, and the staff at Kathy Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of Pauline.

Friends may join the family for a Celebration of Life on October 9th from 2-5PM at The Town Club, 7950 North Santa Monica Boulevard, Fox Point, Wisconsin.
