Sandra M. Harris (nee Freitag), age 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 17, 2020. She was born on June 29, 1941 to Henry and Mary (nee Habel) Freitag. She graduated from Custer High School in Milwaukee and immediately started her lifelong career at Milwaukee County Hospital in the Tumor Registry Department working closely with many physicians.

Even though her official residence was Milwaukee, where she spent a lot of her childhood and the last 20 years of her life was the farm on Big Cedar Lake. She enjoyed swimming, boating, and family get-togethers. Sandra enjoyed helping Terry on the farm, especially working with the calves. She was an extraordinary animal lover and the family pet-sitter.

She liked baking her legendary cheese and schaum tortes, and making “pigeons”. She baked plenty of her famous butter cookies for her brother Bobby. There was never a bargain that she could pass up which left behind MANY “treasures.”

She is survived by her brother Robert “Bugs” Freitag; “daughter” Kathy Holzberger; brother-in-law Thomas Cornell; nephew and Godson, Craig (Debbie) Cornell and niece Jeanne (Steve) Kanugh. She is further survived by other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives and many dear friends.

Sandra is preceded in death by her parents; cherished son Dale; siblings, Carl (Marlene) Freitag, Carol Freitag-Cornell; and sister-in-law Pat Freitag.

Due to COVID restrictions, a private family service will be held. It will be live-streamed on the funeral home Facebook page. The public Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 20 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel (1420 W Paradise Drive, West Bend). Masks and social distancing are required. A private interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society or an animal shelter of your choice.

Sandy loved all things purple, so please wear her favorite color in memory of her.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Jody King and her daughter Carly a.k.a. “Claire” for all of their care, love and support for Sandy these last few months.

I’ve had some seriously great role models in my life. Today, another ascends to heaven.
My Aunt Sandy was So much fun!
We “NY Cousins” (her nieces and nephews) would road trip to Wisconsin almost every summer.
My earliest memories were of Sandy Harris coming to stay with us in NY for the summer, as my mom had 4 girls under the age of 5, with no family in the area.
Sandy was glamorous! Luxurious long dark hair, a bright shade of lipstick, her purple car, her cigarettes and singing Doris Day and Patsy Kline!
Later a few hushed whispers as Sandy marries, has her Baby son Dale, and suddenly, she’s not married. Sandy was the first Single Mom I knew. She lived and loved her mother, my Grandma Freitag, staying with her until her death. She had a great job, and carried on...
The pain and grief she must have felt, when her only son is killed in a horrific fiery crash in December, when Dale was in his prime. She carried on...
Later, she loses her sister Carol, and steps in as Aunt Extrodinaire to Carol’s 4 kids, and her grandkids.
Then she loses her mother. Then her sister-in-law, my mother.
Her brother Bob gets a brain tumor and she jumps in to help. Then she loses her sister in law, Pat, Bob’s wife.
Then this year, her eldest brother, my Dad.
I spent several weeks with Sandy at the lake in West Bend in 2019. As always, she loved on my dogs. She really loved on her nieces’ and nephews’ dogs, without ever having her own.
Kinda like how she loved on all the kids- not being a grandma herself, she was the best Great Aunt to all of them.
Aunt Sandy, I’m so sad you are gone but I can’t help but imagine the most wondrous reunion in heaven- your parents! Dale! Carl and Marlene, Carol and Pat! Caitlee and Janelle....And all the wonderful dogs you’ve loved!!
I promise to visit your grave in Milwaukee after I can travel again. I’m hoping your heavenly reunions are amazing and I know they are full of love.
